Brewery Lane
The Cheese & Burger Society

Going forward here at Brewery Lane we will be picking out the best of the web ( in our opinion ) each month. To show what's happening on the web and what we like at the moment.

This month our pick of the web is The Cheese & Burger Society. This site was put together for The Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board to promote their range of American cheese in the most American way possible, on a burger!

The Cheese & Burger Society - The Honky Tonk Burger

The site is built in Flash and uses a roller deck interface design, with each card within the roller deck showcasing a different cheeseburger. Each burger is displayed lovingly and information on which Wisconsin cheese is used and how to make your own version of the burger is available. Also each burger is given its own voiced introduction, giving a sense of reverence to each of the mouth-watering burgers.

The site has a wonderful vintage style and you can sense how much thought has gone into its build.

The Cheese & Burger Society is also building a great following on Facebook with over 60,000 friends, me being one of them.

The main reason I've selected this site really is that it brings together two of my favourite things, cheese and burgers, enough said really.

A new project - MS Dynamics

A new project has been added to the Brewery Lane bow. With intercentive we developed a new platform called 'Oyster' for Microsoft Dynamics. With this platform clients can pick and choose from a number of tools from online voting to forums and asset management. For more information check out 'Brewery Works'...

The new football season is here...

As an avid football fan the start of a new football season is a date that is always marked down in big red letters in the diary. Though for many the start of the football season starts on the 15th of august, though for us true football fans it was the 8th, with the start of the Football League and Championship.

Can my team the mighty O’s make it higher than 14th in League One this season, or will it be another season of stress and disappointment, that us Leyton Orient supports have come to live with?

Well so far so good this season, with 1 game down and 3 points on the board, with a great away win at Bristol Rovers; see the match report here. This was then followed up with a win in The League Cup over Colchester; see the match report here.

I know its early days but can we go on from this and not have to worry about relegation for at least one season? Who knows, but I hope so.

J Query - Adding an item

As you maybe able to see around my site, there are a number of plus and minus symbols scattered about. This little links enable you to show or hide a page item, such as a main article in the left hand column or a case study in the right hand column.

This little tick is simple to do with just a little bit of jquery and here’s how its done:

  1. $(function() {
  2. Count= 3;
  3. ShowItems();
  4. $("#add-acc").click(function(){
  5. Count = Count + 1;
  6. ShowItems();
  7. });
  8. $("#remove-acc").click(function(){
  9. Count = Count - 1;
  10. ShowItems();
  11. });
  12. });

This first function sets how many items are to be shown when the page loads with variable Count then displays them with function ShowItems()

Also within this fuction are the two click events for showing and removing an item. Each either adding or subracting 1 from the variable Count.

  1. function ShowItems() {
  2. if (Count > $("#accordian .acc-header").size()) { Count = $("#accordian .acc-header").size() };
  3. $("#accordian .acc-header:lt(" + Count + ")").slideDown("slow");
  4. $("#accordian .acc-header:gt(" + (Count - 1) + ")").slideUp("slow");
  5. if (Count == 1) {
  6. $("#remove-acc").hide();
  7. }
  8. if (Count != 1) {
  9. $("#remove-acc").show();
  10. }
  11. if (Count == $("#accordian .acc-header").size()) {
  12. $("#add-acc").hide();
  13. }
  14. if (Count != $("#accordian .acc-header").size()) {
  15. $("#add-acc").show();
  16. }
  17. }

This function ShowItems() does all the work and uses the jquery effects slideDown and slideUp. The function also checks the variable Count against how many items are being displayed.

Brewery Lane is Now Open

Welcome to Brewery Lane, my names is Adam Akers and I'm a web developer and designer and have decided it's about time that I had my own outlet on the web, well why not, everybody else does.

Here at Brewery Lane I hope to showcase some of the work that I have been involved with and also some of the interesting things that I have found out long the way in the world of web design and development.

However, hopefully this site won't just be a haven of web geekness and coding excitement. I also hope to have other interesting tit-bits which I'd like to share with you. There will be links out to sites that have caught my attention in 'Brewery Tipples' and also you'll be able keep up with my 'twitterings' in 'Brewery Twitters'.

Brewery Lane Tipples

Here you'll find what I'm enjoying most at the moment on the web and elsewhere. From great designs to hints & tips found across the web.

It won′t be all web related goodies, there'll be stuff here on anything that grabs my attention.

  • CSS Design Yorkshire - A great UK based CSS gallery. CSS Web Design Yorkshire is a gallery of web sites created by css web designers in the Yorkshire region who build tableless websites using cascading style sheets with good semantic xhtml.
  • w3schools.com - Just such a helpful site if your mind goes blank when you're work on a bit of code.
  • Leyton Orient FC Official Fans' Message Board - 'cos where else I'm I going to find out what's happening with my beloved club.
  • The Internet Movie Database (IMDb) - Probably the best and biggest place for film & television information.
  • dafont.com - This is a great site to get the latest designs in fonts. There are excellent examples that can be downloaded and used free.
  • Web Designer Wall - This a cool site designed by Nick La, using great CSS techniques and WordPress. A great place for ideas, trends and tutorials
  • COLOURLovers - A great resource for colour pallets and design ideas, always worth a look.
  • Paramore|Redd - I like the use of the jquery carousel on this site with addition of nice little ravel for each image. Currently showcased in .NET magazine (no.187)
  • I Am Bored - You can always find a nugget of fun on this site. Helps to pass the time on a slow day.
